- 1201-French 1(1 unit, Gr. 9-12)
Prerequisite: C or above in English
French I is designed to give students ability in handling basic conversational French. The four skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing are developed using authentic French materials. French I students will have many opportunities to experience various aspects of French culture.
- 1203-French II (1 unit, Gr. 10-12)
Prerequisite: French I, C or above or teacher recommendation
French II is designed to reinforce the skills presented in French I and to continue to develop multicultural awareness. Practical applications of the four skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing will be emphasized. Units on geography, cuisine, and aspects of daily life in Francophone countries will provide cultural enrichment.
- 1205-French III (1 unit, Gr. 11-12, weighted)
Prerequisite: French II, C or above or teacher recommendation
French III is an advanced course covering all grammar points previously presented in the first two courses and emphasizing new and more complex grammatical structures needed for oral communication and written composition. This course offers an enhanced understanding of French culture through the study of art, architecture, music, film, literary excerpts, and current events.
- 1209-French IV (1 unit, Gr. 12, weighted)
Prerequisite: French III, C or above or teacher recommendation
French IV is designed for students with a degree of proficiency and ability in the language. A detailed study of grammar points will continue. The emphasis of this course, however, will be on readings that convey cultural information about the French speaking world. This course is only offered at WCHS. Students at other buildings should contact their counselor if they are interested in enrolling.
- 1207-AP French (1 unit, Gr. 12, weighted)
Prerequisite: C or above in French III
AP French, a fourth-level course, is designed to refine students� use of the four language skills as well as to prepare students who choose to take the advanced placement exam. A strong emphasis is on increased oral fluency and written expression. Authentic print and video materials are used to enhance listening and reading comprehension. This course is only offered at THS. Students at other buildings should contact their counselor if they are interested in enrolling.
- 1301-Spanish I (1 unit, Gr. 9-12)
Prerequisite: C or above grade in English
The first level is an introductory course designed to provide a basic knowledge of Spanish. Emphasis is placed on listening and speaking. Students are also introduced to reading and writing. Class activities are based on life communication situations and cultural themes.
- 1303-Spanish II (1 unit, Gr. 10-12)
Prerequisite: C average in Spanish I or permission of the teacher
This class is designed to further develop oral/written communication skills in Spanish. An integral part of the class is application of language and culture concepts to real-life communication situations.
- 1305-Spanish III (1 unit, Gr. 11-12, weighted)
Prerequisite: C average in Spanish II or permission of the teacher
The third level is designed to help students develop fluency and progress in oral and written communication. Advanced language concepts that are essential to further studies of Spanish are also included. This course maybe offered for dual-credit at THS.
- 1307-Spanish IV (1 unit, Gr. 12, weighted)
Prerequisite: C average in Spanish III or permission of the teacher
The fourth level is based on student interest and ability. It includes frequent review practice, commonly used advanced grammar concepts, and reading material based on literary or intellectually significant themes. Students may help select language aspects for focus. This course maybe offered for dual-credit at THS.
- 1309-Spanish for Native Speakers (1 unit, Gr. 9-12)
Prerequisite: Teacher recommendation only
This is a course designed to refine skills of those individuals who have a high functioning knowledge of Spanish. Emphasis will be on refining the grammatical, spelling, and reading skills of students who have demonstrated fluency in spoken Spanish, but who desire advanced skills required for possible bilingual employment and other opportunity.
- 1401-German I (1 unit, Gr. 9-12)
Prerequisite: C or above grade in English
This course is designed to familiarize the student thoroughly with the sounds of the German language in order to develop listening and speaking skills. Students will also be developing skills in reading and writing; however, emphasis is on grammar and structure of the language as well as the culture of the German people.
- 1403-German 11(1 unit, Gr. 10-12)
Prerequisite: German I, C or above or teacher recommendation
The second year is designed to develop skills further in listening, speaking and conversation. Additional emphasis is placed on reading and writing, while grammar and culture continue to be an integral part of the course.
- 1405-German III (1 unit, Gr. 11-12, weighted)
Prerequisite: German II, C or above or teacher recommendation
The third year is designed to improve fluency and progress in oral and written communication.
- 1407-German IV (1 unit, Gr. 12, weighted)
Prerequisite: German IlL C or above or teacher recommendation
The fourth year is designed to expand a student�s knowledge of the German language and culture.

This is an individualized course in advanced French, Spanish or German for students who have successfully completed the fourth level of foreign language study in Independence High Schools and who wish to continue the study of grammar, literature, communication and culture at an advanced level.
