Programs and Activities

A+ (College Tuition Program)

The A+ program offers students the opportunity to attend the first two years of college at virtually no cost.  Depending upon state funding, students who pursue the A+ option can attend any community college in the state.  Qualifications include at least three consecutive years at an A+ school, good citizenship and attendance, and mentoring or tutoring younger students during their high school careers.

The Independence Plan

This program provides in-depth counseling services and resources to students struggling with substance abuse issues. A student may be referred by school personnel, parents, or may self-refer. An assessment is completed, and the student will then see an Independence Plan counselor during the school day.

At-Risk Social Worker

A social worker is on site to assist counselors and other school staff with at-risk students. This staff member has an office in the Counseling Center, and will work primarily to help students stay in school and complete their education.

The Learning Lab

This program provides academic assistance across all subject areas. The Lab is available during some classes and also during IRT (Instructional Resource Time). Much of the assistance is available using a computer and other educational tools, but tutors are a strong component of the program.

Teacher Advisory Program

The Teacher Advisory Program (TAP) at William Chrisman provides the time, through an organized system, for developing one-to-one relationships between teachers and students.

ACTION

ACTION is a program of the Independence School District, designed to identify students who could profit from assistance with common adolescent problems. This program operates outside of the regular classroom setting, and often takes the form of small group meetings.

Options for Earning Credit

Sometimes referred to as Credit Recovery, a number of alternatives to regular classes exist for earning high school credits needed for graduation. All these programs have limits for the amount of credit that can be accepted, so check with your counselor for information on these options. Examples are:

  • Night school
  • Summer school
  • Credit for Completion
  • Correspondence courses
  • NovaNet (computer aided instruction)
  • Internships
